Business Analyst vs Business Analysis: What Is the Difference?

These two terms sound almost identical.

They are NOT.

  • ✓A Business Analyst is a person.
  • ✓Business Analysis is the work or discipline that the person performs.

What Is a Business Analyst?

A Business Analyst is a professional who helps an organization understand a problem, identify what is needed and communicate those needs to the technology or business team.

For example:

A company says: "Our customers are abandoning the checkout process."

The Business Analyst does not immediately start writing requirements.

The BA first asks:

  • ✓Why are customers leaving?
  • ✓Where are they dropping off?
  • ✓What does the business want to improve?
  • ✓What are the current problems?
  • ✓What should the new solution achieve?

What Is Business Analysis?

Business Analysis is the process of understanding needs and identifying solutions.

It can involve:

  • ✓Requirement analysis
  • ✓Stakeholder analysis
  • ✓Process mapping
  • ✓Gap analysis
  • ✓User stories
  • ✓Business rules
  • ✓Solution evaluation

So remember:

  • ✓Business Analyst = PERSON
  • ✓Business Analysis = ACTIVITY / DISCIPLINE

A Simple Example

Imagine a bank wants to reduce the time required to open a new account.

The Business Analysis may include understanding the current process, identifying delays and defining the desired future process.

The Business Analyst performs and facilitates this analysis with stakeholders.

Why Does This Difference Matter?

If you are planning a career as a Business Analyst, you should not focus only on learning documents or templates.

You need to learn how to think like a BA.

That means learning how to:

  • ✓Ask the right questions
  • ✓Find the real business problem
  • ✓Identify missing information
  • ✓Challenge unclear requirements
  • ✓Communicate with stakeholders
  • ✓Convert business needs into actionable requirements

"A good Business Analyst does not simply document what people say. A good BA discovers what the business actually needs."

That is the real difference between learning Business Analysis and simply learning BA terminology.
